Few people remember the old Wagon Train show but Star Trek has overcome network objections, economic hurdles, and political ambitions to establish itself as the leading science fiction franchise in film and television. Star Trek, the original series, starred William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock, and DeForest Kelley as Dr. Leonard McCoy. Due in large part to these three actors’ performances, the Star Trek franchise built a huge, loyal audience that helped Gene Roddenberry bring the series back from obscurity and syndication purgatory. Star Trek: The Next Generation got off to a rocky start. It borrowed too heavily from the original series and did not offer enough of its own originality until the third season. Nonetheless Patrick Stewart, starring as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, led an ensemble cast to success after seven seasons. The series inspired 4 theatrical movies. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was spun off from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Set in a space station beyond the frontier of the United Federation of Planets, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine became tightly intertwined with the Next Generation storylines and helped bring several of them to completion. Star Trek: Voyager launched a new direction for the franchise. Following the adventures of Captain Catherine Janeway, Star Trek: Voyager took audiences across the galaxy on a seven-year mission to return a struggling starship home to the Federation. Along the way many new planets and races were discovered. Voyageer helped tie up one of the major Star Trek plotlines: the war with the Borg. Star Trek: Enterprise took the franchise back to a time before Captain Kirk. Following the adventures of Captain Jonathan Archer, played by Scott Bakula, Enterprise sought to lay the groundwork for the United Federation of Planets and explain how and why Earth became a pivotal player in interstellar politics.
