The John Carter of Mars Shoppe at Xenite.Org

Disney’s “John Carter” movie failed to launch a new film franchise as fans hoped, but it made its mark in history and hopefully one day someone will bring us together under a new John Carter umbrella. Meanwhile, you can still buy the DvD and the books from Amazon.

John Carter of Mars was Edgar Rice Burroughs’ first literary hero. Introduced in the 1912 story “Under the Moons of Mars”, which was later published as a novel called A Princess of Mars, John Carter was a 19th century Earthman who found himself transported to the planet Mars. There John Carter found his true destiny and he won the hand of Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium. For the next 100 or so years John Carter would gradually unite the warring civilizations of Mars and help them enter a new golden age in the Red Planet’s twilight epoch.

Edgar Rice Burroughs is best known as the creator of Tarzan, whose adventures took him throughout the Earth (and down to the Earth’s core). Tarzan has appeared in many movies and television shows. Almost as well-known is the John Carter of Mars character. John Carter shares Tarzan’s sense of nobility and justice as he swashes buckles across the solar system. The John Carter of Mars Store and Pulp Fantasy Store from Xenite offers many Burroughs books and movies.

Although there is virtually no real science behind the stories of John Carter and his family, the pseudo-science is spectacular for its depth and its amazingly detailed structure. Martian philosophy, history, and science are all explored as part of the fascinating background of the stories. By the time the reader gets to the 10th book in the series, a very thorough knowledge of the Martian landscape has been presented, as well as information on numerous species, kingdoms, and customs. The John Carter stories are often cited as among the first influences on many science fiction writers.

For decades fans have hoped in vain to see the John Carter books turned into movies. Now they have the opportunity to see not just one but several John Carter movies. As the original stories are now mostly in the public domain virtually any studio can adapt them to film, and more than one studio has done just that. Of course, it is the join production by Disney Studios and Pixar Animation that has attracted the most attention and interested. Scheduled to be released in 2012 (the 100th anniversary of the first publication of A Princess of Mars), the Disney/Pixar “John Carter of Mars” movie is said to be the first of three movies.

When you combine the big budgets Disney assigns to major theatrical releases with the incomparable talent of director Andrew Stanton, the media expectations will be raised high. People are already looking for anything they can find pertaining to John Carter of Mars. The John Carter of Mars phenomenon could be as big a spectacle as Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of The Rings”, the “Harry Potter” movies, or George Lucas’ “Star Wars”.
