Breaking News: Christopher Tolkien Has Passed Away

Read about Christopher on the Middle-earth Blog at Xenite.Org

J.R.R. Tolkien introduced the world to Hobbits in 1937 after spending more than 20 years developing his myth-creation and story-telling skills. Hobbits burst onto the scene after Tolkien entertained his children with stories about an imaginary little man named Bilbo Baggins. A caricature of stuffy Victorian English upper society, Mr. Baggins went on to become an icon of fantasy literature. The Hobbit was followed by The Lord of the Rings which in turn was followed by thousands of fantasy novels, fantasy worlds, and creatures of the imagination. J.R.R. Tolkien helped to revolutionize fantasy literature. The Hobbit Store celebrates the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

The Hobbit is the first fantasy book J.R.R. Tolkien published. The Hobbit has been transformed into stage plays, audio books, music, and film. The Hobbit Store is named for this iconoclastic figure.

In the story Bilbo Baggins, a respectable hobbit living in his quiet home at Bag End, is recruited by the wizard Gandalf the Grey to accompany 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield on a quest to steal back part of the treasure that was taken from their people centuries in the past by the dragon Smaug.  The quest for treasure gradually transforms into a story of revenge, intrigue, and war.  The book has delighted generations of children and adults alike and has inspired two film adaptations, a television special, and numerous stage plays.

Peter Jackson produced three movies based somewhat loosely on the book, expanding certain parts of the story and adding new elements that both thrilled and disappointed fans.  The movies’ controversial adaptation has inspired more debate and criticism than all the stage plays combined, which usually took far greater liberties with the story.

The Lord of the Rings is recognized as J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece in fantasy literature. The Lord of the Rings has inspired jewelry, costumes, contests, festivals, and movies. “The Lord of the Rings” movies were a smash sensation in the early 2000s following many years in which Lord of the Rings games and merchandise reached markets around the world. The Hobbit Store helps you find everything Tolkien available from Amazon.

In the story Bilbo Baggins, now more than 100 years old, leaves his home in the Shire and the magic ring he found on his adventure to his cousin and adopted son, Frodo Baggins.  Frodo lives peacefully in Bag End for nearly 20 years until Gandalf the Grey returns with dreadful news: Bilbo’s magic ring is more than just a “magic ring”.  It is the One Ring, made thousands of years before by the Dark Lord Sauron to control all other magic rings (and through them Middle-earth’s people).

Gandalf persuades Frodo to leave the Shire and seek help from Elrond, one of the most ancient and wisest of the Elven lords still living in Middle-earth.  Frodo takes with him his faithful companion Sam Gamgee and his younger cousins Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took.  Together the four hobbits find themselves enmeshed in Middle-earth’s great schemes and wars, and they prove to be the only force capable of taking on the Dark Lord and his allies where Men, Dwarves, and Elves have failed.

The History of Middle-earth is a twelve-volume set of books written by Christopher Tolkien in which he follows his father’s career of developing and refining the mythical stories that would eventually define what we call “Middle-earth” today. The History of Middle-earth brought to light many lost manuscripts which once were proposed as books and stories in their own rights, not really connected to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit Store is uniquely fitted to bring together all the classic Middle-earth resources you want to buy.
